Did you know that Raccoons have been known to enter your house through your cat or doggie door?  Did you know that the Raccoons in San Diego, can cause different types of damage which are almost too numerous to mention. In urban environments, These masked crusaders are more than capable of finding shelter just about anywhere. For instance, if the crawlspace under your house is open, or if your chimney is uncapped, they will take full advantage of your hospitality, and move in. Should you charge them rent? Of Course, but good luck collecting it! In the spring time they have been known to tear off shingles or fascia in order to gain entrance to an attic or wall void. They're favorite past time seems to be tearing up newly laid sod (lawn). Is this just for their own amusement? No, they do this in search for food such as: Grubs and Earthworms. MMMM.....sounds yummy doesn't it? NOT! Many a Precious Garden have also be ransacked. Another unsavory act Raccoons perform is,  knocking over trash cans and enjoying your leftovers. "Honey those stupid Raccoons did it again!"  In more rural environments, Raccoons have been known to feast on prized poultry (Chickens and other fowl).  And have made many a farmer mad doing this. On a more serious note,  these wild animals contain parasites, diseases, and pose health risks. When these Raccoons take up residence in your homes they often urinate and defecate everywhere. This can cause major health risks. Removal of these wild animals must be done, and should only be performed by Trained-Licensed Professionals.

At “SPEEDY ANIMAL CONTROL” we strive to quickly Trap, Capture and Humanely relocate the offending Raccoons in San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles Areas. The Raccoons  that are causing the majority of the problems in the San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles County areas are the Procyon Lotor.

The Procyon Lotor, Latin to English Translation means "washer bear" The name raccoon originated from the the Algonquin word "arakun", which means: "he scratches with his hands.". All though raccoons seem to use their hands to wash their food, what they're really doing is using their sensitive fingers to discover something about what they are touching.  They use their hands to "memorize" what food is and what it feels like.  They also fish by feel, rather than by sight. Raccoon adults can weigh between upto 45 pounds and this of course all depends on the food chain and temperate climate in which it lives. The heavier raccoons are generally in the colder climates.

Raccoon signs include distinctive tracks.  The front tracks are hand-shaped with five fingers and a claw mark above each finger.  The back tracks show a pointed heel at the bottom and five long toes, each showing a claw mark above.  Scat (droppings) is generally dark colored but that depends on what the animal has been eating.  Scat has a granular appearance it tends to contain shell fish, palm fruits, fig seeds and any other local delicacy tends to be resemble dog feces.  In some areas, raccoons may deposit scat on large tree limbs or logs, or on high spots and small rises in the land.

Was THAT a Raccoon?

You may have found evidence of a raccoon in the area if you have located the distinctive tracks. The front tracks are hand-shaped with five fingers and a claw mark above each finger. They are approximately three inches long, and show a rounded palm. The back tracks are approximately 9 ½ cm (3 ¾ inches) long and show a pointed heel at the bottom and five long toes, each showing a claw mark above.

The raccoon's stride pattern is 15 to 50 cm (6 – 20 inches) or more, depending on how quickly it's moving.

Trees that house raccoons have been climbing can easily be recognized by the claw scratches on the bark made as they climb.

Raccoons are very vocal and they love to Chatter. Research shows that they have a vocabulary of more than fifty-one distinct sounds and calls. One call sounds like a drawn-out tremulous "whoo-oo-oo-oo." It has been compared to the call of a screech owl. When raccoons are quarreling, they sound like very large, angry cats.

After catching these Raccoons,  we humanely release them in approved areas far from their capture sites, or euthanize them in a humane manner as the situation dictates (only if they are diseased or too badly injured). All trapping is done in accordance with local, state, and federal laws. We humanely Trap, control and Remove most Raccoons that we catch. If the removal of these  Raccoons must be done, it should only be performed by Trained and Licensed Professionals, who know how they think and can react accordingly. In many cases, wild animals cause moderate to severe damage to property. Preventative maintenance is highly recommended to keep those pesky animals from returning.
